Headteacher’s Views: The Importance of Open Days

What you can expect on Open Day

A Beaconhurst Open Day is an exciting opportunity for us to invite current and prospective parents to experience the school in action during a normal day.

After a brief introduction from myself – so that you know who to find later for a chat! – you will be led on a tour of the school by some of our pupils, who will tell you about their experiences at Beaconhurst and answer your questions. We don’t tell the pupils what to say: we want them to tell you truthfully what life at Beaconhurst has been like for them.

Once tours are complete there is an opportunity to chat to staff over a coffee and a piece of our famous Beaconhurst shortbread. Current parents are also always on hand to talk about being a parent at Beaconhurst. Then you might decide to go away and reflect on your visit; you can arrange a further meeting with myself and you can consider a taster visit for your son or daughter.

Why are Open Days important?

So why should you attend an Open Day when you can visit our website, online prospectus, and Facebook page? Because fundamental aspects of a Beaconhurst education need to be experienced.

Every school is different. Each has its own learning environment. At Beaconhurst, we pride ourselves on a calm and supportive learning environment where no pupil is overlooked. Visitors always comment that the learning they see is focussed and constructive and the pupils are engaged. As a recent new pupil commented: ‘everyone here really wants to learn!’. Our small classes, and our talented and highly committed staff, equal a learning environment where pupils are treated as individuals.

One of the most important things about Beaconhurst is the quality of relationships between the staff and the pupils. HMIe praised us on our ‘positive, supportive and mutually respectful’ relationships. These relationships are based on our values, which are central to our educational model: respect, ambition, resilience, integrity and empathy. These are not just words on a poster, they are ‘embedded in school life’ (HMIe).

Come and see for yourself.

Join us for our upcoming Open Day on Thursday 1 March 2018, from 2:30-4:30pm.
