BOYS HOCKEY V HIGH SCHOOL OF GLASGOW - SATURDAY 19TH NOVEMBER
Further to two very good recent wins against Glasgow school opposition, Beaconhurst 2 – 0 Glasgow Academy, and Beaconhurst 3 – 1 Hutcheson’s, the boys 1st XI  were looking for the ‘Glasgow’ clean sweep against the High School of Glasgow on Saturday the 19th of November. The game was played at Forthbank instead of our usual Stirling University venue.

Beaconhurst started well and had the upper hand throughout most of the first half, this was a good, fair and competitive match throughout but we clearly had the best of the possession and came close to scoring on several occasions. Tom Hynes hit the post after much pressure play but soon after this we deservedly took the lead through good interplay, resulting in a short corner which was then well finished by Sam Hynes to give a 1-0 lead. As the half progressed we were then unlucky to have a goal disallowed but generally continued to maintain the pressure on the High School defence and to control most of the play. That said we reached half time only one goal up and it was clear the second half would obviously remain competitive.

Although the game remained open it was clear that we were having more opportunities on goal than the High School. The High School goalkeeper made several fine saves during this period of the game to keep his side in the match. Throughout this period, as with recent weeks, our defence remained strong and solid, ensuring that the High School had very limited opportunities, if any, on the home goal.

Even though we were only one goal ahead as we started the second half, we retained our shape and discipline and continued to press hard for the second goal that we knew would probably put the game beyond the reach of the High School, especially with the way our defence has been performing.  There were also some very good attempts on goal mid way through the half by Anand Cheema, who was very unlucky not to score, and Cameron Blaney. The High School were clearly relieved to still be in the game at this point at only one goal down as it moved into the final quarter. After a move involving many of the team, Robbie McDermott was released into the heart of the opposition defence and showing a combination of pace and skill outstripped the chasing defenders to slot the ball past the busy Glasgow keeper to make the score 2-0 and put the game beyond the visitors.

These were two fairly matched teams and the game, although intense and competitive, was played  in good spirit. We look forward to a return match.

All in all a great few weeks hockey, combined with a great run of results for the Beaconhurst 1st XI has resulted in the squad growing in confidence and now looking forward each week to our next competitive match.

GIRLS HOCKEY SATURDAY 3RD DECEMBER 2011
Beaconhurst 2 – Trinity Academy 2
Beaconhurst were at home to Trinity Academy from Edinburgh and it was an exciting morning’s hockey for the spectators. All games were very close and there were many thrilling moments in front of goal.
The first XI played very well, combining better as a team and soon went into a 1-0 lead when Holly Wilkinson deftly converted a penalty corner. However, the pressure meant that there were gaps at the back, which Trinity exploited on a few fast breaks, finally equalising. As the game progressed, Beaconhurst had several shots saved, and good chances missed, until 5 minutes from time when Amy Shepherd scored from a very difficult angle to give Beaconhurst a well-deserved 2-1 win. Good performances from Lauren Simpson, Charlotte Laing, Joanna Lowrie and Amy Shepherd.
The 2nd XI started rather slowly leaving gaps between the defence and midfield. Trinity exploited this and soon scored. Beaconhurst began to play a little better and the match became a real end to end battle with chances in front of both goals. No more were scored, and Trinity claimed the victory, but there were skilful performances from Christy Malcolm, Morgan Brown and Jodie Differ.
The S2 year team played a very exciting game. Emily Dawson made a good run down the right from defence, passed to Stephanie Mailer who took the ball to the edge of the circle, passed into Iona Sutherland who swept the ball into the goal. A great goal! Not satisfied, they repeated the process 5mins later! However, Trinity Academy came back into the game, scoring just before, and then just after half time. The home team did not panic, and it was a very close match, but Stephanie Mailer scored near the end to record Beaconhurst’s second win of the morning. Well played 2nd years, especially those mentioned already and Eleanor McAllister in goal.
The S1 year team were down on numbers, but were ably assisted by some Transition girls who rose to the challenge enthusiastically. This was another exciting game in which both teams had chances to score. It was Trinity Academy who took advantage when a ball bouncing in front of the keeper was slotted home. The visitors scored again to win 2-0. Good performances worth mentioning from Kelsey Campbell and Ellie Towers.
