Beaconhurst School

Outdoor Education

Outdoor EducationWe have long believed at Beaconhurst that learning does not only take place in the classroom, but rather that many of the skills developed in an academic setting can be equally well tested in a practical one. To this end, we have an ambitious and diverse outdoor education programme. Starting in the Nursery and Junior School with theme-based activity weeks, the programme culminates in the Senior School where pupils take part in a residential field trip which incorporates hill walking, camp craft and navigation skills with an overnight expedition as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

School Trips

Not all activities have to be physically demanding and so throughout the school year academic and cultural trips are organised by departments, Houses and year groups. These tie-in with key aspects of the curriculum and allow pupils to consolidate their learning through hands-on experience.

Pupils learn about the needs of others through the extensive charity work that takes place. In helping to raise funds for good causes, the awareness of difference is raised in the minds of our young people. This is complemented by visits from a range of guest speakers who address both small groups as well as the whole school at assembly.

We run a large number of extra-curricular activities ranging from judo to home economics which take place either at lunchtime, after school or at weekends. Pupils at all levels are encouraged to take part and widen their experience and skills base.
