Junior Start 1
There are 2 key workers within Junior Start 1 working on a ratio of 1:8. Junior Start 1 focuses on introducing children to the routine of the Junior Start department. Each child has a key worker responsible for planning their learning, recording progress and reporting to parents. The children’s learning is developed through the Curriculum Framework 3-5 with the emphasis on learning through play. Progress is recorded through individual Starting Points profiles. Children in Junior Start 1 take part in a wide range of activities to support their learning and development including arts and crafts, free flow play, outdoor play, PE, music and movement, story time, news time and role play. Through the curriculum offered, children in Junior Start 1 will be empowered as learners, take part in active learning within appropriate contexts within an enriching environment and learn to value diversity. A written progress report is provided for each child in December and June as well as a Parents’ Evening in March. A weekly PE session is provided in the Sports Hall. However, all children have the opportunity for physical play outside on a daily basis.
Junior Start 2
Junior Start 2 continues the approaches used in Junior Start 1. There are 3 Junior Start 2 classes working on a ratio of 1:8, each with a key worker who is responsible for the planning and learning of the children in their group. Children will continue to learn and develop through the provision of a curriculum that focuses on children’s attitudes, interests and behaviour, children’s past and present experiences and children’s knowledge, understanding and skills. In Junior Start 2 children’s learning and development is further extended through a wide range of topics and on an individual basis, with children being consulted in this process. The Junior Start 2 children begin to prepare for the Transition into Junior 1 through shared activities with Junior 1 children, visits to the Junior 1 classroom and Junior School and inclusion in moving up day. Junior Start 2 also introduces topics that are continued into Junior 1 such as an introduction to Jolly Phonics. A written progress report is provided for each child in December and June and a Parents’ Evening in March. Italian is introduced in Junior Start 2 and is taught by a member of the Modern Languages department.
