House System
Education is, above all, preparation for life. And we firmly believe that it is not just the qualifications gained at school, but also the values and attitudes developed in their formative years that provide our pupils with the best chances of success long after they leave Beaconhurst.
The experience of Senior 5 and 6, therefore, not only focuses on the academic but also on the pastoral and social development of our pupils. The School has developed an awards system that includes Distinctions, Colours and Merit Awards which tangibly promote an ethos of achievement whereby hard work, commitment and excellence in every area of school life are recognised, valued and rewarded.
However, we also ask our senior pupils to take on responsibilities within school and work with younger pupils. The school has four Houses (Brown, Cameron, Morton and Plant) which have House Captains and House Prefects. They organise a range of inter-house activities, sporting events, social functions and charitable ventures. Through this senior pupils gain valuable experience that will prepare them for life after school.
Our Prefect Programme supports those pupils in the leadership roles they take on both as School and House Prefects through a residential training weekend at a local outward bounds centre and regular meetings with the Headmaster and senior staff. Senior pupils also form a social committee each year which is responsible for organising, amongst other things, the Senior Prom at the year end. All pupils in Senior 5 and 6 take part in Enterprise education as well as being encouraged to develop their own individual interests and skills. Through these activities, pupils gain respect for each other, a sense of teamwork and the satisfaction of achieving a common goal – attributes that we feel are essential in today’s society.
